When you are about to become parents there is for sure a lot of excitement and curiosity in your mind. But probably you are also wondering how your financial situation will work out if one or maybe both parents can’t work for the time the child needs your full attention.
To support parents financially during the first period of their child’s life and to make sure, children are well cared for, the German government decided in 2007 to pay Elterngeld (money for parents) for parents who spend time with their small child as a replacement payment for their usual income.
This is a great system and once one understands how it works, it’s a great help. But you probably have a lot of questions in mind. We will try to bring light into the darkness and hopefully answer most of them ;)
